In case you missed it, Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple died at age 56 last Wednesday. A few hours after I heard news of his death, I listened to a song called “Castles Made of Sand,” by Jimi Hendrix. I combined the news and the song and came up with what I’m writing now.

In the Jimi Hendrix song, the first verse speaks about a relationship between a man and a woman. The verse ends with the man saying, “Oh girl, what happened to the sweet love you and me had?” Looks like he was putting too much faith in love. The second verse talks about a little Indian boy who loves playing war games in the woods with his Indian friends. He dreams of becoming an Indian chief one day. Many moons pass and the night before he sings his first war song, a surprise attack kills him in his sleep. We may say he was putting his faith in strength and power. Each of these verses end with the refrain, “Castles made of sand, fall in the sea, eventually.”

After hearing the song, I thought of the innovative genius that was Steve Jobs. He is dead, so we may place the emphasis on WAS. Although his genius will have indefinite positive effects on technology, his vision and innovation will no longer be there for iPod, iPad and iPhone enthusiasts. No one knows if multi-billionaire Steve Jobs put his faith into his own genius or into God. He was a very private man. But what about us? Do we put our faith into earthly things which could be interpreted as building our castles in the sand? Or are we building our castles or our homes on the Rock… on Jesus?

Christians lack faith sometimes. In our society, we have things far easier than when Christianity originated nearly 2000 years ago. Because of the apparent ease in our lives, we find it more difficult to persevere through certain situations. How many of us have made it through very tough conditions or problems? I would say that probably all of us have made it through such circumstances. But how many of us, if we were told before hand of the difficulty, would have said, I can make it through that with no problem.

When we moved near the Texas panhandle town of Clarendon, we were able to experience one of the hottest summers they ever had, as well as one of the harshest winters. The extremes were amazing. With no air conditioning, at times we would lay our one-year old son down for his nap and it was 90 degrees in the room. The highest it got was 93. Even with fans aimed at him, the dry heat was still hot. In the winter, we were in store for culture shock. We had a vented wall heater in the living room and one in the bedroom. In other words we had a propane tank outside and no central heat. We all slept in the one large bedroom. On the first real cold night we kept the heater in the bedroom high enough to keep it 67 degrees in the room. I went outside the next morning to check the gauge on the propane tank. The gauge may have been malfunctioning, but it read that we had used 5% percent of our propane by keeping it 67 degrees in our room for one night. We made a decision right then to sleep in the smaller living room with the French doors closed to the adjacent dining room. We were able to keep it about 65 degrees or so in there and not use all our propane. But once we opened those French doors to venture to the bathroom, we stepped into the low 50s. We only had to live like that for a few months. Looking back at those times living near Clarendon, they were some of the most relaxed times of our life together, but at the same time, they were trying times. If someone would have told us about some of the trials we endured there before hand, we might not have moved. The extreme heat and cold were nothing compared to some of our problems back then, but we wouldn’t exchange living there for anything.

So, I mention the couple of our humorous problems above to show how little they were in comparison to those of other people, especially the Apostle Paul. He learned to be content or as the original language helps to point out, he learned to be independent of his situations. When he states in Philippians 4:13 that he can do all things through Christ, Paul means he can make it through the situations mentioned in the previous verse and all circumstances in-between without them affecting him negatively. What kind of circumstances might those have been? A quick look at II Corinthians 11:24-28 discusses some of the events in Paul’s life: five times he received lashes, three times he was beaten with rods, stoned one time, shipwrecked three times, adrift at sea for a day and night, in danger from rivers, robbers, and from his own people, from Gentiles, he was in danger in the city and the wilderness, danger from false brethren and from the sea, often without food, and there was danger from cold and exposure.

Paul had it rough. During some of his trying circumstances, he even sang hymns to God. Let us remember to understand Philippians 4:13 in the same way the writer of it intended. He didn’t mean a garbage man, through Christ, could walk into a research laboratory and find a cure for cancer. Paul meant that through Christ, he could deal with any situation that he found himself in because God would help him through those situations.

Life is made up of stories, some small, some big, others true and a few that aren’t so true. It all depends on the storyteller’s point of view. Christina Crawford told a horrendous story about her movie star mother Joan. It resulted in the movie, Mommy Dearest. In Genesis, a story is told by another child, his name was Ham. Noah and his family had finally exited the ark, heard God’s promise and seen the rainbow. Noah planted a vineyard and after harvesting its grapes, drank a bit too much wine. His son Ham saw his father naked and drunk. Ham immediately ran to tell his brothers. Well, he paid for it. When Noah found out what he had done; he cursed Ham’s child Canaan. I can just imagine the stories Ham told about his father from that time on.

If you have a child, a spouse, or a sibling that likes to write; what kind of story would they publish about you if they had the opportunity? The life we live is being examined by so many. We have God who sees all we do. We have our friends, our co-workers and most importantly, here on earth, we have our immediate family. I’m not so sure my son and wife would write a very uplifting story about me, at least after some hard times we experienced today. I have some advice for myself, but others can heed it if they want: Live life as if your closest family members were writing a book about you, already have it sold to a major publisher, and movie studios are waiting for the finished product. I hope it doesn’t take that kind of thinking to make our lives fall in line with what God wants. But, if it works…

Work is hard sometimes, one may even say it is unbearable. We have a savior that can identify with us in so many ways. He was hungry. He was thirsty. He was angry. He was tempted. He had a pretty demanding job at times. His occupation of being “Savior of the World” led to his healing of many.

In our passage today, Jesus began teaching in the synagogue. He healed a man afterward. He then later healed Simon Peter’s mother-in-law at her house. That evening, he wasn’t able to rest at the five o’clock whistle. He continued to work. For the whole town gathered at Peter’s house. He healed many more and drove out demons.

We think sometimes that Jesus might not know how we feel after a hard day of work. Our bosses ask us to do the miraculous sometimes, but at least we don’t have to drive out demons. Okay, you can now insert your joke about your boss who acts like a demon on occasion.

I want all of us to see a parallel between the work of Jesus and our job duties. Early the next morning (Mark 1:35), Jesus got up and went to a solitary place to pray. Jesus prayed after his exhausting day of work. There are many other times when Jesus went off to pray. Jesus needed time alone with his heavenly Father. We do too. We cannot tackle our jobs alone, whether that job is a peanut butter sandwich inspector, traveling salesman, or 11th grade student. Many of us think we can handle our jobs all by ourselves. Many of us think we don’t need God’s help. Many of us refuse to take time out of our day to plead to God for help…or to praise him for helping us through a tough day. I’ve been guilty of this. I vow to do better… will you make that same vow?

Bible Passage: 1st Thessalonians 5:18

Warning: The following devotional tidbit might leave your mouth hanging wide open. The experience mentioned, certainly left my mouth dangling

Paul wrote to the Corinthian church that they should give thanks (2 Cor. 9:15). While I took my son to a breakfast with Santa this morning, we did this. We gave thanks for the food. I heard a lady at the other end of the table encourage her son to do the same. She ended up giving the thanks for her little boy’s food. As we ate, I conversed with the mother. I found out she was changing careers. No longer would she teach, she was now going to be a mortician’s assistant. “I’ll be doing the incisions. I’ll get to cut and embalm,” she said with delight. She actually did have a smile when she said it. After the Santa event was over, I commented that I’d seen them say grace and asked her what church they attended. “Oh we don’t go to church, we’re pagans, but we still say thanks.”

Clunk! That was my jaw hitting the ground.

Three things I have to say about that. 1) Who was she thanking? 2) It’s so nice she decided to make her son a pagan. Did you notice her comment? WE are pagans and 3) This world is different than what we’re used to, but maybe more similar to the time of the Apostle Paul than we think.

We need to be thinking how to reach those different than us. If we keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, well, that’s the non-technical term for insanity.
