Gideon giving thanks to God from the Book of JudgesBible Passage: The Book of Judges

To put your mind at ease, the absolute and only answer is NO! In the past, I’ve heard people wonder if the God of the New Testament is different than the God of the Old Testament. But he’s the same God, same creator, the same loving architect of life.

“But God in the Old Testament was so angry like a mean father and God in the New Testament is so loving and full of grace.” People say and think this quite often.

I will be finishing off a study in the book of Judges this coming Sunday. What I have learned about the book of Judges is that God’s ever present grace is seen within its pages. Read the book of Judges, or just skim through its pages looking for these phrases, “they did evil in the eyes of the Lord” and “they (the Israelites) cried out to the Lord.” The book is full of the fury of the Lord after his chosen ones; the Israelites began worshipping pagan gods.

However, when the Israelites cry out to the Lord, a cry asking for forgiveness, they become recipients of God’s everlasting grace. Then again, they fall into idolatry and have to suffer a punishment God uses to correct their wrong ways. They then repent, are shown grace by God, and have many good years again. The Israelites aren’t much different than us. We, like the Israelites, stray from the path God wants us on. We then ask his forgiveness and God, full of grace, forgives us. We don’t deserve that forgiveness or his love, but he gives it to us anyway.

God is no different today than he was in the Old Testament. His love endures forever! He gives us grace in the midst of judgment. He always has, and he always will.
