Reading through the first four books of the New Testament is difficult at times. My wife and I are embarking on this journey again this month. I encourage you to do the same. In doing so, one of the more difficult readings is the first chapter of Matthew. When I was in preaching school someone asked a professor if the genealogy of Jesus could be skipped since it wasn’t that important. That professor almost had a cow. One of the most amazing things found in the genealogy of Jesus is that Rahab, a gentile prostitute is found to be an ancestor of Jesus. For His purpose, God has used people in the redemptive story of Jesus Christ that we today would never have thought of using. Any one we look at today, no matter how undesirable they may seem, is valuable to God and can be used by Him to accomplish His purpose. God can do as he sees fit and sees fit to love everyone.

You’ve heard that saying, “Where one tree is cut down, God will provide another.” What? You haven’t heard that saying? It’s true. I’ve witnessed it personally in my own front yard. I had to cut down most of my red maple the other day. I left a stump with some leaves growing out of it. A day later, I noticed in our overgrown yard that what I had thought was a tall weed was really a baby oak tree. God provided another tree for our front yard. It is due to his creation, the squirrels, that we have another tree. I praise God for the wonders of this world. There never was any need for me to be concerned or worried about our barren yard. God takes care of everything. That’s what our scripture verse tells us today.

free Bulletin articlesBible Passage: Psalm 37:35-39

A question arose the other day, “How can I be doing wrong if things are going good for me?” This question has been asked for thousands of years and I’ve come to realize that life is simply hard to understand at times. Have you or anyone you know ever asked this question? If so, this may be evidence of a great need in the life of the one asking.

David offers evidence in Psalm 37:35-36 which demonstrates that prospering does not equal a blessing from God. He states, “I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in its native soil, but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found.”

Those who do wrong and prosper won’t prosper forever. Some may say they will get what they deserve. However, my prayer is that they simply change their ways and become a forgiven follower of Christ. For if we look at things truthfully; the greatest difference between the evil who prosper and the devoted follower of Christ is the forgiveness provided by the blood of our savior.

This past week, I’ve heard stories of painful lives full of distressful decisions which need to be made. I will leave you with a similar sentiment as was found in my tidbit from last week, “The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.” – Psalm 37:39.

free Bulletin articlesBible Passage: Ecclesiastes 3:11

My recent trip to Kansas this past weekend helped cement the point of Ecclesiastes 3:11 in my mind. There is a lot of beauty between Dallas and Wichita (really, there is). I like the open prairie and I was able to see all of it. Then there were the good people I visited with in Norwich. I experienced good conversations and I was shown the kindest hospitality. All in all, I witnessed a lot of beauty this past weekend in a small Kansas town. On my way back, I saw old friends in Oklahoma whom I treasure. God has indeed made everything beautiful, not just land, but people and valued relationships. I ask you today, what has God made beautiful in your life? Is it a place you like to visit or a person you like to talk with? Take time today to think about the “beautiful” which God has made for you.

free Bulletin articlesBible Passage: Psalm 143:8

I’ve been allowing God to guide me. He has pointed me in directions I wasn’t even considering. This happens when I cry out to him and ask, “What do you want me to do? Where do you want me to go? I just don’t know what to do.” I’m specifically talking about my personal ministry. I can notice God leading my path. There’s a whole lot more I wish he would do for me, but I can see God working. Just today he brought some people back into my life I thought were gone. They were supposed to sell their business and move back to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I asked them about that today and they’ve decided to stay right here. My wife and I are praying that our relationship strengthens. We have seen it grow and know it will grow further. I think their daughter may attend our church outreach event this weekend. Please keep Hoi and Vivian in your prayers. Please pray that God will open opportunities for us to show them His love.

Do Cats Love Us Like God Does? https://beethomas.com/cats-love-us-like-god/ Tue, 25 Apr 2017 21:02:53 +0000 http://beethomas.com/?p=1187 I used to have a friend (I mean cat) named Spunky. He was my best friend for so many years. At the time he died, he had lived with me for over half my life. Spunky loved me no matter what. If I left him alone while I traveled, he loved me when I returned. If I neglected to clean his litter box for a week, he still loved me. I guess to a cat, not cleaning a litter box could be considered sinful behavior. But Spunky still loved me. When I didn’t feed him when he wanted, he may have got mad, but he never stopped loving me.

free Bulletin articlesBible Passage: Romans 5:8

I used to have a friend (I mean cat) named Spunky.

I knew that he loved me because he always rubbed up against my leg, or my outstretched fingers and that’s when he said he loved me. He purred. No matter what I did to him. No matter how bad of a person I was to my friends or family, no matter how sad I was because of my problems, he loved me. I could have killed some guy for his tennis shoes and my cat Spunky would still rub up against me and purr, “I love you.”

In reading a book by Brennen Manning titled “Ruthless Trust,” I have been reminded of God’s endless love for all of us, no matter what we do. This does not mean God is pleased with our every behavior. However, he always loves us. We can’t make God stop loving us, just like my cat Spunky. If I neglected to feed my cat, neglected to change his kitty litter, neglected to spend time with him, my cat would still love me although there might be times when he’d wonder if I felt the same for him.

Remember right now, God loves you no matter what. Even if you’re angry at him or neglecting him, God is still loving you. The big question is whether or not your behaviors and actions are making God wonder if you feel the same about him.

I Am Blessed! https://beethomas.com/i-am-blessed/ Thu, 21 Jul 2016 17:07:01 +0000 http://beethomas.com/?p=919 Look at my life and you'd wonder how in the world I could ever feel blessed. It is true, you might have to look at my life through faith googles to do so. But isn't that the way all Christians should look at life every day?

chickenBible Passage: Deuteronomy 7:13

I heard a wonderful sermon yesterday morning, an absolute astounding message of hope. Then last night, I received some very bad news that had me down for most of today. However, with the bad news last night and my melancholy mood today, I’m still quite happy for I have been blessed.

I found out today that my son ate chicken basted with paint thinner on Saturday. He has had no ill effects since my wife usually takes the skin off of chicken when he eats it. Praise God for that. I was also blessed today by having a wife who was a model Christian despite our record temperatures, both inside and outside. It was 101 here today outside. It was 90 inside (we refuse to use our air conditioner until June. It costs way too much).

On top of these big blessings, we had a calm evening after I arrived home today. There are times in our life when things just don’t go as smoothly as I would like. After I arrived home, I sat in the car and said a special prayer to God that I would act in a Christ-like manner, and that I would be more gentle and patient tonight. I prayed the same for my wife and son. With this heat, I needed more help than usual. God answered my prayer with a big resounding “YES!”

Although deep inside there’s something that is really bothering me, God has bombarded me with blessings today and this evening. They may have been small ones, but for me, a blessing is a blessing. “Count ‘em all,” I say.
