You’ve heard that saying, “Where one tree is cut down, God will provide another.” What? You haven’t heard that saying? It’s true. I’ve witnessed it personally in my own front yard. I had to cut down most of my red maple the other day. I left a stump with some leaves growing out of it. A day later, I noticed in our overgrown yard that what I had thought was a tall weed was really a baby oak tree. God provided another tree for our front yard. It is due to his creation, the squirrels, that we have another tree. I praise God for the wonders of this world. There never was any need for me to be concerned or worried about our barren yard. God takes care of everything. That’s what our scripture verse tells us today.

free Bulletin articlesBible Passage: Luke 19:1-10

Zacchaeus was a wee little man. If being short is considered a problem, it was the smallest of his problems. He worked for the Roman government as a tax collector and he cheated the people. Even with these problems, he was interested in Jesus and Jesus was interested in him. But the people watching his incident in the sycamore tree and Jesus’ interaction with him were a little upset. They said “…What business does he (Jesus) have getting cozy with this crook?” (Luke 19:7 -The Message). Other Bible versions simply call Zacchaeus a sinner.

What right did Jesus have to eat at Zack’s house? All the people there would be sinners. Jesus answers this objection with the claim, “For the Son of Man came to find and restore the lost.” It’s a good thing Jesus would eat with sinners. There weren’t any other kind of people in Jesus’ day. There were folks who thought they were perfect, but they weren’t.

It’s sort of like today. We’ve got people in this world that think Jesus isn’t interested in them because of some extremely judgmental church experience. Some think Jesus wouldn’t want them because of how the media portrays all Christians, you know, as hypocrites. I sit here today and say it’s untrue. There are plenty of Christians who love and accept people no matter their status or lack thereof. Jesus did this and I see this as a growing trend in the Christian world. More and more congregations are modeling themselves after Zach’s house than as a sanctuary for perfect people.

You’re right, this idea of loving people no matter what hasn’t always been the case, but I sense a change is coming.

Jesus Came to Set Us Free – Bulletin Article https://beethomas.com/jesus-came-set-us-free-bulletin-article/ Sun, 16 Apr 2017 17:24:12 +0000 http://beethomas.com/?p=987 Struggles can sometimes make us wish we were dead. They can make us feel like we are prisoners. Struggles can make us blind to the blessing Jesus died to give us. Jesus’ words should be uplifting to us if we struggle. However, just reading his words aren’t always a magic potion to happiness.

This Christmas season is not over yet. Well, maybe it is for those folks that take down all their Christmas decorations today. Unlike them, we don’t even take our tree and decorations down for two more weeks. We love this season. However, there are those who have a very hard time right now due to numerous problems in their lives.

I met Vicky, a store clerk, on December 23rd. She looked very sad. I asked if she had any prayer needs. Her biggest problem, she admitted, was just getting out of bed each day and facing life. Hey everyone, that’s a big problem. Then on Sunday at our nursing home worship service, I met a caretaker of one of the residents. She too seemed quite depressed during this most joyous time of the year. I had asked for prayer requests from the group and I received a few, but not from this woman. Afterward, I went to her and found out she had a very important prayer need. It was the first Christmas for her family after the death of her mother. The entire family was enduring much sadness at this time. Others I spoke with over the past few days have family members with cancer, various family struggles, and complex character issues that make things tough in their lives. Then this morning I read these words from Jesus,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.” (TEV)

Struggles can sometimes make us wish we were dead. They can make us feel like we are prisoners. Struggles can make us blind to the blessing Jesus died to give us. Jesus’ words should be uplifting to us if we struggle. However, just reading his words aren’t always a magic potion to happiness. Oftentimes, Jesus needs to work through us to help our friends and family through their struggles. Who are you going to help today, this day after Christmas? As for me, my always open invitation to pray for you is still here. We have a phone number too. It’s at the end of this email. We’re here to talk, my wife or myself. I wish we could do more and we look forward to a time when we can.

May you be blessed this week and remember, Jesus wants to set all of us free from any struggle we encounter.
