I often ride an exercise bike. While I do so, I spend time talking to God, reading the Bible, or I drift back to the Wild West by reading a western from Louis L’Amour. Well, today I had a very simple thought cross my mind while I rode my bike to nowhere. I figured out that if I don’t eat right, all the exercise in the world is useless as I strive to lose weight.

Has anyone else figured that out? That thought reminded me of Jesus’ empty tomb. If the body of Jesus was still in that tomb, the entire Christian religion would be useless. It is all based on a risen savior. I also thought about a couple other situations that need vital connections, one is religious in nature, and the other one isn’t. The idea of saying “I love you” to a spouse is meaningless unless there are loving actions accompanying those words. And finally, I thought of the demons spoken of in the book of James. It is said that the demons believe that there is one God. James is stressing that belief without actions is meaningless.

We cannot take our lives out of context. We cannot look at one little part and say, “Wow! I’m doing good.” Our lives are connected parts of a greater plan. If our words are nice but our actions are inconsiderate, there is a disconnection. If we exercise every day but eat hot fudge sundaes for breakfast or greasy foods at every meal, there is a disconnection in our desire to be healthy.

Onto more religious matters, if Jesus died but wasn’t raised from his tomb, there is a gigantic disconnection. And if we say we love Jesus and never try to improve ourselves spiritually, there is big problem of disconnection in our life that needs fixed. Do you have this disconnection in your life? A question arose the other day, “How can I be doing wrong if things are going good for me?” This question has been asked for thousands of years and I’ve come to realize that life is simply hard to understand at times. Have you or anyone you know ever asked this question? If so, this may be evidence of a great need in the life of the one asking.

David offers evidence in Psalm 37:35-36 which demonstrates that prospering does not equal a blessing from God. He states, “I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in its native soil, but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found.”

Those who do wrong and prosper won’t prosper forever. Some may say they will get what they deserve. However, my prayer is that they simply change their ways and become a forgiven follower of Christ. For if we look at things truthfully; the greatest difference between the evil who prosper and the devoted follower of Christ is the forgiveness provided by the blood of our savior.

This past week, I’ve heard stories of painful lives full of distressful decisions which need to be made. I will leave you with a similar sentiment as was found in my tidbit from last week, “The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.” – Psalm 37:39.

On October 14, 2003, millions of Chicago Cubs fans wept. They saw a stellar season go down the drain. Two things happened in the fatal 8th inning of the Cubs vs. Marlins game that night in Chicago. The first bad thing was an uncaught foul ball hit into the left field stands. The other bad thing was an error by the shortstop (Alex Gonzalez) which gave the Marlins the chance to score many times that inning. I remember it like it was yesterday. As you might imagine, I am a huge Cubs fan.

That error cost the Cubs a chance at the World Series. It’s like committing a sin which will keep you out of Heaven. Can you even imagine such a sin? I may yet see Alex Gonzalez (the shortstop who committed the error) in Heaven. Committing an error that keeps the Cubs out of the World Series may or may not be the unpardonable sin, especially since they did win the World Series in 2016. As for us, we commit errors or sins as we call them, quite often. Is any one of them big enough to keep us out of the World Series, I mean Heaven? From my understanding, our sins can be forgiven, all of them. Period.

Unbelief in God is the only sin which cannot be forgiven. Look at the logic behind that statement. How can a sin be forgiven if one does not believe in the only one with the right and power to forgive sins? We have a wonderful and merciful God.

Unfortunately, committing errors (sins) is a way of life which doesn’t end with baptism. We don’t become perfect saints when we become Christians. That is simply when we are initially forgiven. It’s a struggle to live a less error filled life. We need to be in God’s word. Meditating on what we read. We need to be on our knees in prayer. We need to be ready to do battle with the enemy, not the opposing baseball team, but Satan. Read what our verse of the day says. It speaks about our struggle to live with fewer errors.

I pray we will all commit to the struggle of living more Christ-like lives.

I am proud to announce that I now sit at a clean desk. I find it amazing that my desk was clean just a few weeks ago. It WAS clean. It WAS spotless. But then I began my normal routine and the clutter began to pile high.

My desk reminds me of the Christian life. When we realize how dirty and cluttered our lives are, we seek God and bury ourselves underneath the baptismal waters with Christ. With that baptism, we receive forgiveness of sins (the clutter). What happens after baptism? We return to our normal routine and the clutter begins to pile high. We sometimes stumble into that clutter called sin, and then there are those times we jump into it and enjoy it for a while. However, we always need to be rid of the clutter. That’s where the sacrifice of Jesus comes in.

As a Christian, we have Jesus who still works on our behalf. He didn’t just die for one sin on the cross. Jesus died for the sins of the world and each sin any of us will ever commit if we ask to be forgiven. “…Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people…” – Heb. 9:28

The normal routine of our lives brings us clutter and Jesus died so it could be taken away. Life doesn’t get much better than that!

terrible peopleBible Passage: Romans 5:18-19 Ezekiel 18 Luke 23:50

I’ve been hanging around some folks who think we are terrible people. They say there is no good in us at all. Therefore we need Jesus to save us. I agree with part of their statement. I believe we cannot do enough good to get to heaven on our own and so we need the blood of Christ to cover our sins. If he had not died for our sins, we’d never get to heaven. But saying that we, God’s creation, are just terrible people, goes beyond everything I’ve ever thought about God.

I thought we were made God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27). I thought little children were good when they were born. Why else would Jesus say one has to be like a little child to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 18:3)? The King of Tyre was told by God that he was not guilty of sin until he had actually sinned (Ezekiel 28:15).The Apostle Paul told the pagan poets in Athens that we are all the “offspring of God” (Acts 17:29). I can’t believe that as his offspring, we are terrible people. Then I love the passage that speaks about the good/righteous man who has a bad kid and that bad kid has a righteous/good kid (Ezekiel 18). The point Ezekiel makes is that we won’t be punished for anyone’s sins but our own.

God promises that we won’t pay for what someone else has done. Look at it this way, if my Dad cheated on his taxes, I wouldn’t go to jail or pay a fine for what he did. God promises that won’t happen. That would be like Adam, the first man in the world, sinning. Because of his sin, we hit the evil jackpot and all of us when we are born, become terrible people. That’s sort of sounds as ridiculous as someone saying my Chicago Cubs are going to win Baseball’s World Series this year, or any year for that matter.

The Bible does say that because Adam sinned, we all have experienced death and sin entered the world (Romans 5:12). Looking further down the page at Romans 5:18-19, the Apostle Paul writes that through one man, all people everywhere were condemned. Let us say we were all sentenced to death because of Adam’s sin. It doesn’t say that we are all terrible people. Then Paul writes that because of one man, Jesus, and his act of righteousness, his dying on the cross, we are found “not guilty” so that we can have eternal life.

After looking at these verses closely, it becomes so clear. Jesus’ death didn’t bring righteousness to everyone automatically. His death upon a cross brought an opportunity for us to be found “not guilty” and to be given an eternal life. Just like with Adam; his spiritual death (sin) didn’t make everyone a terrible person. Adam’s fall gave us the opportunity to sin and have our lives, the beautiful masterpieces God originally created, covered up with muck and dirt and soot. Therefore, we need a savior like our wonderful Jesus who waits for us to submit to him and become his children. We sin, we pay. Could it be as simple as Ezekiel 18 says it is? Oh, by the way, I was reading the Bible the other day and just happened to come across Luke 23:50 which says Joseph (the man who buried Jesus’ body) was a “good and upright” man. Now did that mean he was “good and upright?” Maybe.

Remember this phrase about how God created us and our eternal need for Jesus, the prhase: “Good, not good enough.”
